seventeen again.

(Ann Shoket and I skyping)

So, today was the weirdest day ever. In the best way possible.

I woke up late to my alarm, ran over to print my final project. RAN back over to my apartment. Got changed for my career advising appointment. Sped to class.

Breathed.

Sat down. Then it was time to let myself think about the ‘interview.’

INTERVIEW? Yes. Interview.

For the past month or so, I have corresponding with the editors at Seventeen Magazine to be considered for a finalist in their annual ‘Pretty Amazing Contest’ – sending them videos, and essays, and powerpoints.

The top 5 finalists go to NY, mingle with celebrities, do fancy shmancy stuff…and are in the running to win $20,000 and be on the cover of Seventeen.

In my mind, this interview was extremely preliminary. And I was taking it very seriously. I had my notes on one computer, skype set up on another computer. I put on lots of blush and wore my best heels (no, they couldn’t see my feet. It helps me get down to business)

Then…5 minutes before our scheduled meeting I get a friend request on skype from “Ann Shoket.”

PAUSE.

My reaction is stupidly oblivious. I think this is just the cover name for all Seventeen Mag skype names – because Ann Shoket is literally the Editor-in-Chief. No way she would ever talk to me.

PLAY.

ANN SHOKET APPEARS ON MY COMPUTER SCREEN. Wearing a dvf esque wrap dress and a chain bib. Good choice, Ann.

I tap my heels, hoping they don’t hear. I can’t stop saying the phrase, ‘Oh my heavens.”

We talked about our similar chain bibs, her office, my house…and then her office again. 23 gillion seventeen mags in the background.

Then…the sneaker. She drops in this comment.

“I just wanted to let you know, you’ve been selected for the top 5 finalists to be in our Pretty Amazing Contest, You’re coming to NY in two weeks. Only three words ran through my head.

I just peed.

I really didn’t – but if there was ever an emotional situation equivalent to peeing in your pants– it was this.

So, I hung up the skype call. I fled to my roomies bedroom. We screamed louder than our neighbor’s pot belly pig and jumped just like girls do in the movies when Chad Michael Murray finally looks their way. Then we went out for beer battered chicken and spuds, and finished with river street pralines. Nothing like changing from pumps to flats after exurting two weeks of energetic excitement in 30 minutes.

I can’t explain the nervousness, the excitement, the honor!

So, yea…I’m in the top five finalists to be on the cover of Seventeen. WHHAAAAT???

For the first time that anything big has happened in my life, I feel like accepting it. Not hiding it.

As my dearest friend and mentor Erin said 30 min before the interview, “Don’t squish anything.” Originally referring to my cleavage, and then progressively referring to my amazing-ness and the great things that have happened in my life.

It’s an honor, and I’m so excited to share this whole journey with you – here on a+o.

Today at noon, my personal webpage goes up on 17.com.

It then begins. The voting.

The way the top 5 narrow down to the winner is through voting – on my webpage on 17.com!

SOOO, look out for my webpage link -  lots of vids, photos, updates, plugs to vote and my whole trip chronicled in ny.

Loves.

Linds.

some thoughts - with absolutely no connecting thread

-i gotta figure out how to get my top knot to be less meatball more marykate. theres just too much hair on my head to fit into a tiny knot. for being my daily hairstyle, i should probably get some notes on perfecting it.

-having a beautiful, spacious kitchen really does make you want to cook. as well, having dark thin hallway for a kitchen, kind of makes you not want to cook.

-washing machine. how breathtaking to have one in the next room for one week during spring break instead of 4 floors down with quarter slots. the little things.

-around this time every year i start questioning if i have good style. no idea why. it takes a good while for me to transition into spring wardrobe - while the transitioning is taking place i doubt myself. first in my style, then my talent, then my dreams. then its april and i’m fine, floral print mixing and all.

-going forward i’m budgeting to buy most of my food from the markets, now instead of just my veggies. the smaller items can come from other stores.

-as for my week -  lounging in my C&D leggings while catching up the the last two month’s of released movies with my mom, in our sun drenched living room, amidst the shmorgezboards of cheeses, breads, and roasted veggies we will be gourging on.

the homebody’s spring break.

i decided something. today.

i have a lot of fear. and gosh - i want to be so much and do so much while im living. i literally cannot let a feeling ruin the decisions i make in my life. because those decisions are what shape me.

i like myself. and i think im worth being who i want to be and doing what i want to do - without the over thought junk coloring the truth dark.
